Your driver collects you from your hotel in Amman to begin a day exploring a city that has been lived in for around nine thousand years.
You'll start at King Abdullah I Mosque, completed in 1989 by the late King Hussein as a memorial to his grandfather. Its blue mosaic dome is one of the city's landmarks, and the prayer hall holds up to 7,000 worshippers. It's one of the few mosques in Amman that welcomes non-Muslim visitors.
Next, the Amman Citadel, on the highest of the city's original hills. Here the columns of the Roman Temple of Hercules stand alongside the remains of an 8th-century Umayyad palace, with views across the whole white-stone city below.
Down in the valley sits the Roman Theatre, cut into the hillside in the 2nd century AD and seating around 6,000 people. It's still used for performances today.
From there, a walk through the downtown souks — gold, spices, sweets and everyday Amman life — before visiting the Archaeological Museum and Darat al Funun, an arts foundation showcasing contemporary work from across the Arab world.
