Your tour leader collects you from your hotel in Amman in a private air-conditioned vehicle, and you'll drive south to Petra, Jordan's greatest attraction and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Founded around the 6th century BC by the Nabataean Arabs — a nomadic people who built a trading empire reaching into Syria — Petra is a city carved directly into rose-red sandstone. You'll ride on horseback towards the Siq, then continue on foot with your local guide through the narrow gorge until it opens onto the Treasury.
From Petra, it's a 90-minute drive to the protected area of Wadi Rum. Lawrence of Arabia called it "vast, echoing and god-like," and the phrase has stuck because nothing else quite covers it.
There you'll transfer to a 4x4 jeep for around ninety minutes among rugged sandstone mountains and coloured sand dunes, stopping at canyons and at rock inscriptions carved by travellers thousands of years ago.
Afterwards you'll be driven back to your hotel in Amman.
This Petra and Wadi Rum tour from Amman is a long day, but it's the most efficient way to see both sites if your time in Jordan is limited.
