Two ancient civilisations, eight days, one seamless route. This Egypt and Jordan travel package opens in Amman and closes in Cairo, covering the highlights of both countries without the backtracking that usually eats into a combined trip.

Jordan comes first. You'll stand on Mount Nebo where Moses is said to have looked out over the promised land, see the extraordinary 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in Madaba, and float in the Dead Sea at the lowest point on the surface of the earth. Then Petra — through the Siq on foot, to the moment the Treasury appears in the gap ahead, followed by the Street of Facades and the Royal Tombs.

A short flight carries you to Cairo for the Egyptian half. The Giza plateau delivers the Great Pyramid of Cheops, Chephren, Mykerinos, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, before you continue to Sakkara for the Step Pyramid of Djoser — the oldest monumental stone building in the world — and Memphis, capital of the Old Kingdom.

A full day in Cairo covers the Egyptian Museum and Tutankhamun's treasures, the Salah El-Din Citadel and its alabaster mosque, the churches and synagogue of Coptic Cairo, and the Khan El Khalili bazaar, trading since 1382.

Day seven is yours: rest in Cairo, or take the optional excursion to Alexandria for the Qaitbay Citadel, the Catacombs and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

Everything is private — your own guide, your own vehicle, and a pace you set.
